Poetry Challenge Day #3

Today's prompt from the WD's April Poetry Challenge was to write a poem titled "The Problem with _________________." Immediately I thought about the problem of being a mother...as did HT. Check hers out too.

The Problem with Being the Mother

The problem with being the mother
is that I really don’t have a clue;
Somehow, when you were born I guess
I was supposed to know what to do.

Wet diapers and tummy aches,
Chicken pox and scraped knees,
Tee ball and math homework,
Ugly stray dogs with fleas.

Kicking-screaming-lay-on-the-floor
in the grocery store checkout lane fits;
My grandmother’s heirloom Thanksgiving
Day platter dropped and busted to bits.

Pimples and bright shiny braces,
Eyes rolling, deep sighing -
My very presence
seems quite horrifying.

Driver’s ed and football games,
Taking my car and staying out late.
What college will you go to?
Who will you date?

The problem with being the mother
is that I really didn’t have a clue;
But, in spite of me, I think you've
turned into a quite wonderful you!

FYI - E once threw such a huge fit in the line to check out at Winn Dixie that the manager opened up a closed lane just to get us out of the store. Proud parental moment. :-P

D and I are sitting here in a sleep-deprived stupor. So - we have a lot to look forward to, huh? :)
